The Biri Rock Formations on Biri Island, Northern Samar, are among the most dramatic geological features in the Philippines — a vast field of enormous black volcanic rock sculptures shaped by centuries of Pacific Ocean waves crashing against the shoreline. At high tide, sea water forces through narrow channels between the boulders, sending spectacular jets of spray skyward in a natural show that attracts photographers and adventurers alike. The surrounding seascape of turquoise water against dark basalt creates an otherworldly beauty unique in the region. Biri Island itself is a protected area with pristine coral reefs and traditional fishing communities.

Travel Tips
Take a ferry from Allen or San Isidro port to Biri Island, then hire a habal-habal to the rock formations. Visit during medium to high tide for the most dramatic wave action through the rock channels. Wear rubber-soled shoes as the volcanic rocks are extremely slippery when wet. Stay on designated viewing platforms and never attempt to cross channels when waves are active.
