About
Catarman, the capital of Northern Samar, contains a compact heritage district of Spanish-era churches, colonial houses, and plazas that reflect three centuries of Philippine history. The San Bartholomew Parish Church, at the heart of the district, features a distinctive neo-Gothic facade and interiors adorned with centuries-old religious art. The surrounding streets are lined with ancestral homes whose wooden architecture and capiz-shell windows preserve the architectural vocabulary of the American colonial period. Walking tours of the district offer an intimate look at the layered cultural heritage of Northern Samar.

The heritage district is walkable from the town centre — hire a tricycle from the bus terminal to the plaza as a starting point. Approach local guides at the tourist office for self-guided walking maps. The parish church is open for visitors outside Mass hours; always dress modestly.
